My guy pretty like a girl
And he got fight stories to tell
I see both sides like Chanel
See on both sides like Chanel
He's so real for that
Some of these artists I've listened to way more than others, and I'm always discovering new music. That's the best part, I can never listen to everything in my lifetime. Also gatekeepers suck! Nobody should feel pressured to know the name of every recording just to say that they're a fan of a band. In fact, gatekeeping is just selfish. If you get upset that newbies are listening to your once-niche music, suck it up. Famous does not equal good, and obscure doesn't mean good either. Although smaller artists definitely have way more soul than whatever feel-good pop-slop is topping the charts right now.
Sorry, not to get all elitist. Elitism is bad. But still... you can tell when muscicians make a song because they're trying to manufacture the next big hit based on overused meoldies, or when a song comes from a place of genuine emotion. Similar reason why I can't listen to modern Taylor Swift, she's just no longer relatable. When she makes music it's an ego-trip, she wants to keep her postion at the top. Sure, it was always pretty basic pop music with the same instruments, but back then the heartbreak songs had some meaing to them. The whole RED album is great for example. Her new stuff "sounds" even grander and more developed at a glance because the production value went up, but she's no longer the same person. She's no longer human, she's a brand. I guess most celebrities have to replace their quirky self with a brand identitty.
Maybe Taylor Swift isn't the best example, but you get the idea. Niche, indie or unpopular music often sounds better because it feels genuine. Still, there's nothing wrong with with liking modern Taylor Swift, everybody has their own taste in music. Even if it's soulless Benson Boone or whatever.
Sometimes I feel like a dick because "you're not a muscician, why do you have a right to critique them". To which I say, fair enough. But most people listen to a lot of music, so we should be allowed to say what we like and dislike, right?. Who needs to be qualified in anything to have an opinion anyway. Free speach and all that jazz.
19/08/26- Yo Matt proxy's new album is gasssss. A shame he has the personality of an edgy 14 year old
